I'm really confused, can anyone help...
I'm using Forte Free Agent to view this newsgroup and I'm SURE there's
something wrong with the posts I'm seeing.
Many NEW Messages I saw only a couple of days previous have totally
disappeared, but many older messages remain...!?
I read loads of Replies but the original message doesn't seem to
exist!?!
I can't figure out what anyone is talking about because I don't think
I'm getting all the posts... HELP!

Anyone having similar problems? anyone know how to fix it?

Also, when I try to post messages it sit for ages then says some
nonsense about failing, and logs that post in my outbox as NOT sent.
However, if I try again a few times and get the same result I find
I've bombarded the group with multiple posts!! even though Agent says
it was NEVER sent successfully.!?

SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!

Anyway, here is a 6 line ASCII pic of a baby & his favourite toy to
keep you happy:

Your configuration of Forte Free Agent is faulty.

In Free agent there are heaps of configuration settings and options
for the user to set-up and you have to get every one of them right
to suit your own personal preferences.

Ask your question in the newsgroup:

      alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent

I hope you got your Agent problems fixed. Sorry, I don't use Agent, even
though we have it here. My newsreader of choice is WinVN but since we
had so many problems with our newsservers and had to constantly switch
from internal server to internal server, I now use Netscape because it
allows switching without refreshing.

However, the point of this reply is to say what an excellent baby! I
especially like the
blank look on his face. He must be preparing to be a cyber baby.

NOTE: I do not pick up my mail from the idirect address that you
see. If you are e-mailing me and hit the reply button, add an "e"
to "freent"; its absense is to stop the torment of automatic mailers.

(the email may not get through because it looks like a spamblocked address)

You've posted this message once before and I replied to it so you
obviously are having problems not seeing all the posts.

Let's try once more...

Your configuration of Free Agent is faulty. Ask your questions in the
newsgroup:

         alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent

If you use Free Agent regularly you should add the above newsgroup
to the list of newsgroups you read. It is an excellent newsgroup
with a Guru who answers everybody's questions daily.

Read it! Not all alt.* newsgroups are crap.

Bye,

Yeah, as I thought the email has bounced back into my mailbox.

This could go on a hell of a long time with Naughty reposting his message
and then not seeing any replies.

Munged addresses! Bleah! I give up!

Colin, Colin, Colin! If I could e-mail this to you, I would. I just
e-mailed Naughty and I'm pretty sure it went through. You have to REMOVE
the "no2spam." from Naughty's address before sending e-mail to him. (You
did do that, right?)

As it happens, Naughty saw your post about that newsgroup. I e-mailed
him with no difficulty at all (it couldn't have been simpler; when I hit
reply, I just removed the "no2spam." from his address and clicked on
"send") and he replied that he had seen it.

Nope...I just used the on-line TIN newsreader which has the 'R'
option for "Reply to poster" and does not require messing around
with spamblocked addresses...just type 'R' and press Enter and bingo
off goes the message...then I just type 'F' for "Followup" and TIN
posts the same message publicly in the newsgroup as well.

Whoopdedoo! magically simple eh? None of this stuffing around with
unmungeing email addresses.

I can't be bothered with mungeing...if messages bounce then they
bounce...end of story. Hah!

Oh well, I hope someone in alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent
newsgroup is as kind and emails replies to any questions Naughty
might ask in that newsgroup.

No Colin; I think you have missed the point. By commanding your TIN
newsreader to reply via e-mail, you are indeed e-mailing. But there's
really no point in arguing. You probably are incapable of understanding
my point.

Yeah, that picture of yours Joris is a classic.

They say every picture tells a story but your "Nosee" picture is
so useful because it can be easily adapted to tell many stories.
It's a classic.

I tend to like pictures which contain a message or make a point.

Oh yes it could...you missed the point!...I wasn't emailing, I was
posting a message using the TIN newsreader...but if you are not
familiar with TIN's R and F commands you probably would not
understand my point.

Whatever...I'm relieved you can still laugh after being slain.
What will you be in your new reincarnation? I know...A Owl.

Yes actually they can if they are really determined to do so,
several people have done so quite recently.

That's OK, as I've already said...my anti-spam method for email is
very anti-social. Timo Salmi uses something similar and only
authenticates certain people to email him.

Freedom to email other users is a two-edged sword. I have had some
quite unpleasant unsolicited email in the past from users responding
privately to something I have written in public newsgroup
discussion...usually an RFD/CFV debate which can become very heated.

I post a lot to many newsgroups and readers hit their "Reply to
Sender" buttons with monotonous regularity. What really used to
irritate me was those who both email you and post publicly the same
message and do not tell you they have done it. Grrrrr.

I could, but do not, complain to ISPs about private email received,
as many users do. Frankly, I do not want to receive such unsolicited
email in the first place.

Each user has to choose their anti-spam methods for both email spam
and newsgroup spam. Last year my junkmail had exceeded 150 per month
and seemed to be rapidly rising so I made my choice of action.

I also choose not to try to email to munged email addresses. If you
disagree with my choice then it is your privilege to disagree.

If you choose to use a munged email address that is also your
privilege it is widespread practice these days. My choice is not to
email people with munged addresses.

Historically, Llizard and I have long disagreed on munged email
addresses.

She tells me off for refusing to fix up people's munged addresses
and I tell her off for requiring me to take the trouble to do so.
However, both of us are anti-spam.

My own anti-spam measure is very anti-social...my public address
is spamblocked so that you can't email me.

Normally I don't want to email anyone...I say what I have to say in
public in the newsgroups and I have no particular wish for people to
email me about what I have written publicly. I have now wish to
engage in email exchanges which may, or may not, prove acrimonious.
If something cannot be said in public then it's probably best left
unsaid.

So...if I do happen to use the TIN newsreader's 'R' command ( reply
to poster ) and it bounces...that's it...end of story I simply
cannot be bothered unmunging munged mail addresses...it's not the end
of the world if people do not see my responses.

Ok Colin, let's do a little comparison. llizard's address, like mine, is
munged to prevent spammers. Can somebody e-mail us? Yes, if they have an
IQ of about 95 or above (which rules out idiots as well as spam-bots).
Now, you don't munge your e-mail address, but it is spam-blocked. Can
anyone e-mail you? No. Even if they're really clever? No.

I disagree. For example, Joris e-mailed me the other day to ask my
permission for him to include some of the a.a-a FAQ on his Web site.
Would that have been appropriate to post to a.a-a? No, because it was a
private matter between the two of us, and it would have been quite
boring to everyone else. So he unmunged my address, and e-mailed me.
Simple. People who want to communicate with you privately have no such
option.

I agree fully with you Matthew. Unmunging of addresses is an easy task and
mungung is an effective way of stopping spamming (unless you have used the
raw, unmunged addy in the past). It is very useful sometimes to be able to
contact an ascii artist privatly, for congrats, permissions or even to say
'hi, how are you!' and other general messages just not appropriate to the
entirety of the group.

Although it`s not in my sig any more that my reply addy it ROT13`d, it`s
fairly obvious that it`s not a valid address. It takes someone with a
slightly better IQ to figure that one, but once you read my sig it`s pretty
obvious what my address is, unless you try to email
mar...@bigfoot.com ... that of course is silly! :o)

Since the two of you can't communicate privatly and therefore do your
wash in the newsgroup, I think everyone here knows about your
disagrement. No need to explain it to me.

I usually don't interfere in this kind of discussions (see? I am
a reasonable guy) but the: "you can't see my point" from both sides
really amused me (still is): tha'ts all.

You make the very valid point that public flamewars between
individuals is never entertaining for very long once the original
spectacle loses its novelty.

I will try to remember that although it is often difficult when
something apparently interminable starts appearing in a newsgroup
and nobody challenges it or calls a halt.

Historically, squabbles have always been a part of alt.ascii-art and
were prime causes of the move to create the moderated newsgroup
rec.arts.ascii...which didn't solve the problems either!

Great song, one of my favourites, because I can identify with many
of the lyrics...

" For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself then he has
not, to say the things he truly feels and not the words of one
who kneels, the record shows I took the blows and did it my way! "

Sing along folks! :-)

Actually Sinatra didn't like that song very much although he made it
a best seller.

The world doesn't seem quite the same without Old Blue Eyes. Anyone
got an ascii-fied GIF of him to go with "Der Bingle"?
